Hunting Equipment

When you are just a beginning hunter, you may not know there are a number of regulations regarding the use of your new gear. We want everyone to be safe and enjoy their new hunting equipment, so we encourage you to follow these five etiquette rules to make the most of your next hunting adventure:

#1: Utilize all weapons with care.

The first basic rule is founded on the simple safety precaution of always being careful with a loaded gun. Always point it in a safe direction. Never aim at anything you don’t intend to kill. Never be uncertain about the thing you’re shooting at when you are aiming through the gun sights. Make sure your gun is unloaded until you are ready to start shooting. Lastly, keep your finger off the gun’s trigger until you want to fire the gun. You need to treat all weapons the same as if they are loaded. Too many incidences have happened in which someone was almost sure that a weapon was empty in some instances with a fatal outcome.

Hunting Equipment

#2: All targets should be easy to see and identify|Make sure you can see your target plainly|Any target needs to be easy to recognize|Your target should be clearly in your sight and identifiable}.

If you are unable to identify the target, hold your fire! Some people have indeed shot someone else by mistake (including children) because they incorrectly assumed they were seeing an animal. Once a target catches your eye, be sure there is nothing else in your line of fire. If an animal is on a hillside or ridge, you should not shoot because you cannot see what is beyond the hill.

#3: Make sure you know present day rules pertaining to the using specified gear.

In the recent past, bows and arrows were an excellent option for killing game. But, it isn’t unlawful to fire at animals by implementing archery equipment. Still, you may use a bow and arrow to shoot at a target.

Hunting Equipment

#4: Protect yourself.

Make sure that you are not a target for a beginning shooter. Make sure to wear vibrant clothes ; then people can tell you are a person. You should also wear ear and eye protection. The glasses will guard your eyes from gaseous substances expelled out of the gun. The ear protection will protect you from damaging your hearing because of the loud sound that comes from firing.

#5: Don’t be needlessly cruel when hunting game.

Prior to shopping for Bow Hunting Equipment, you need to remember however that there are many models of bows and arrows available. As much as aluminum arrows are more cost-efficient, you might try going for arrows made from carbon. More than the arrows however, you also need to search for the finest archery bows for your bow hunting activities. Youth bows are perfect for younger ones.

While on your Alaska vacation you may want to visit the Big Game Alaska Wildlife Center to get a close up view of some of the big game from the state. You won't have to hike for miles and hope to see some, you will have the opportunity to visit them at the place where they are cared for by caring people. This 140 acre area was opened to the public in 1993. Here you will be able to see the animals that have been injured or orphaned and are now either back to good health or on their way to it.

The Bald Eagle you will most likely see was saved from a severe gunshot wound. The Great Horned owl will have you trying to turn your head 360 degrees! There are bison for you to learn about and get up close to see. Did you know they can't see very well but they have a great sense of smell and hearing?

So what is so great about the relative of the goat, the Musk Ox? One of the things that make them so valuable is the winter coat they have that when combed out in the spring yields some of the warmest cloth available anyplace. There are items made from this fabric in the gift shop which is located in the log lodge which was built by the owner, by hand, from logs of trees killed by spruce bark beetles.

You may think you need to go west to hunt the big deer and bear but in the Highlands area of Maine the hunting is excellent for the trophy kill. Maine tourism will offer you the opportunity to hunt for deer, moose, bear and any number of waterfowl. You will enter the state with the largest number of bear in the lower 48 states. The Highland area is the perfect location to fulfill your dreams of a trophy for your collection.

The bear hunting season is a 4 week season generally the last week of August into September. To hunt the bear hunters use bow, rifle, slug gun, mussel loaders, hand guns or maybe they just use a camera. Hunting bear isn't like hunting deer or moose. A bear will turn on you if it feels threatened; it is, after all, a predator. They don't lie down and bleed out like a deer, they will hide so the search can be daunting and you may not find it until you smell it. Or, it may take off running and you will be chasing it for miles, sometimes as much as 10 to 20 miles. That just tells you to make sure the shot is a kill shot to save both you and the bear a great deal of pain and work.

If you want to spend some time fishing you have come to the right place. In Maine there are beautiful streams where you can be isolated as you cast your fly into them to catch the Native Brook Trout. What a thrill to be with nature and fishing in a cool stream with no one to bother you. There are also Landlocked Salmon and Pickerel fishing that you may enjoy. Ice fishing is another challenge that you may want to try in the Highlands. Grab your snowshoes and equipment and enjoy the beauty of Maine in the winter.

It sounds strange, but it's true - you can hunt for polar bears. The polar bear is a massive beast - reaching a weight of over 1320lbs, he's on par with a Kodiak. And, given his propensity for withstanding the worst nature has to offer, he's just as formidable as any of the other large bears out there.

Those who've done it, say the polar bear hunt is the toughest in the world. Generally, polar bear hunting expeditions are run from mid February to late April. With temperatures regularly bottoming out around -40¼F, it's easy to see why. You'll need to be at the absolute peak of fitness to stand up to the elements, and you'll have to apply for some special permits before you go.

The good news is, there are scores of outfitters specializing in polar bear hunting trips. Some fly you near to the site you'll hike toward, others lay on snowmobiles to get you to the right area - in either case, once you get to camp, you'll have a tent and a pack stove and little else to protect yourself from the arctic air.

To avoid disappointment, look for outfitters who are open about the number of hunters they've led to success and brush up on the legalities of bringing your trophy home.

When you're hunting, particularly in an area you're not familiar with, it's important to stick to territory you're allowed to hunt on. Everyone has lined up a shot and caught the glint of a thin wire fence through the scope at one point in their hunting life. But the a great catch can turn into a miserable day quite quickly if you misjudge things

Sometimes it's not a big deal, the fence is just a marker for the rancher whose land you're hunting on - other times, it's a property division. The trouble with property dividers is you don't know whose land is on the other side.

Taking game without permission from someone else's land can cause you trouble - but if the other land is across a county or state line you could find yourself in real hot water. Avoiding trouble is a matter of knowing the land you're hunting - scout it in advance and know the boundary. Another top tip for avoiding problems is to remember the number one rule of hunting: never take a shot unless you know what lies beyond it!

Outfitter hunting - advantages

Particularly when you're going after big game, like elk or caribou, booking your hunt with an outfitter can be easier than going it alone. There are a number of things to consider - from the equipment and physical effort required to understanding the lay of the land and knowing where the beasties like to hide.

An outfitter can provide a solid alternative to spending thousands on gear you're unlikely to use for any other purpose or hunt in your lifetime. That isn't to say hunting with an outfitter is cheap - it isn't, but you've got to weigh the investment up against the savings. Additionally, an outfitter can provide you with some essential services once you've made that golden shot and bagged your trophy. Bear in mind an elk weighs at least four times what you do, and consider how readily you can pack that animal out of the hunt zone - with an outfitter, a lot of that hassle simply disappears.

The majority of good outfitters won't guarantee you a kill- this is because to do so is impossible unless you're hunting on a ranch or farm that breeds the animals for this purpose. However, an outfitter worth his salt will usually give you a fifty per cent chance of bagging a good mark. So do your homework and check the outfitters' references from the outset to avoid disappointment.

The Ins and Outs of Bear Hunting

If you are looking for the hunting experience of your life, bear hunting is the thrill for you. Whether it is brown bear, grizzly bear, or black bear, bear hunting is a dangerous yet thrilling experience that excites most hunters.

If grizzly bear hunting is what tickles your fancy, travel to Alaska and hunt in the Management Unit 9. Grizzly bears dominate Unit 9. They dominate Unit 21 in Alaska, too. Grizzly bears are considered one of the most dangerous, unpredictable bears in the world, so considerable care is required when hunting these types of bears.

It has been noted that Grizzly bears and brown bears are interchangeable. Outfitters and guides will dispute this belief as they encounter bears – both grizzly and brown – in their day-to-day life. Those that travel on the shore line while bear hunting will experience more brown bears. Those bear hunting more in the interior will come across more grizzlies. Grizzlies are also smaller than brown bears, but genetically, they are the same.

Brown bear hunting is as dangerous as hunting grizzlies. Brown bears are physically larger because they live in a more temperate climate and their diet is high protein, high fat salmon. They are also distinguished by their coloring, which can be anywhere from blonde to brown, and even black.

Black bears, smaller than other bears, are not in any danger of becoming extinct. Their only major threat is poaching. Legal hunting – that is hunting with a licence – regulates the number of bears able to be harvested, which is extremely important to preserve the number of bears in the wild.

Before you go bear hunting, make sure you have the proper equipment to make your hunt successful. Your hunting rifle must be a 30 calibre or higher and the barrel must be channel glass bedded. The best rifle to use is one that shoots consistently in all types of weather. Outfitters will also tell you that you are responsible for your own gear – the ammo, sleeping bags, personal items, and your firearms permit. Make sure you carry that permit with you at all times when hunting. Alcohol is permitted in camp, but only in moderation. Excessive drinking and firearms are a dangerous combination.

Food banks are the recipients of harvested game animals. As a bear is a huge animal, you would not be able to go through that much meat on your own, so outfitters, who are required by law to salvage the meat, donate it. You can take some bear meat home, if you wish.

Learn the tagging system of the area you plan on hunting in. Knowing this information will allow you to hunt other kinds of wild game – pending that you have the right permit to do so – while bear hunting.
