#1: Utilize all weapons with care.

The first basic rule is founded on the simple safety precaution of always being careful with a loaded gun. Always point it in a safe direction. Never aim at anything you don’t intend to kill. Never be uncertain about the thing you’re shooting at when you are aiming through the gun sights. Make sure your gun is unloaded until you are ready to start shooting. Lastly, keep your finger off the gun’s trigger until you want to fire the gun. You need to treat all weapons the same as if they are loaded. Too many incidences have happened in which someone was almost sure that a weapon was empty in some instances with a fatal outcome.

If you are unable to identify the target, hold your fire! Some people have indeed shot someone else by mistake (including children) because they incorrectly assumed they were seeing an animal. Once a target catches your eye, be sure there is nothing else in your line of fire. If an animal is on a hillside or ridge, you should not shoot because you cannot see what is beyond the hill.

#3: Make sure you know present day rules pertaining to the using specified gear.

Bear in mind an elk weighs at least four times what you do, and consider how readily you can pack that animal out of the hunt zone - with an outfitter, a lot of that hassle simply disappears.

The majority of good outfitters won't guarantee you a kill- this is because to do so is impossible unless you're hunting on a ranch or farm that breeds the animals for this purpose.
