If you are a surf angler, hooking a sizable striped bass in the surf is one of the most exciting experiences you can have. The secret is choosing the right rig and the right bait for the job. Here are my two favorite surf fishing rigs for this sought after fish.

The Fish Finder Rig

There are various forms of the fish finder rig, but the one detailed here has caught more striped bass than any other. This surf fishing rig is best used with live bait, eels hooked through the the tail are always the top choice, followed by either menhaden or herring. Leader length between hook and swivel should be around 20 inches. Attaching a weight slide above the swivel will make the bait presentation much better than a fixed version. Striped bass have excellent eyesight so try and keep the rig as simple as possible. The fish finder rig works well because it allows the live bait to move naturally in the current.

The Hi Low Rig

There are also many versions of the high low rig, but this is the one that seems to catch the most striped bass. This rig works well because smaller bass tend to sit higher in the water while the larger fish will stay closer to the bottom. For this surf fishing rig tie two 5 inch dropper loops on a 5 foot length of leader, keeping the loops around 12 inches apart and tie your hooks to the end of the loops. 15 inches below the bottom loop attach a weight snap, and 15 inches above the top loop tie on a swivel for the main line. The object of this rig is for the fish to hook themselves, so circle hooks will work the best. Try using a larger bait like bunker chunks on the bottom loop, and a slightly smaller bait like blood worms for the top loop.

Selecting the right crappie fishing reel to match your crappie rod is important to have a well balanced crappie fishing rig. There are three types of reels you can select from and all of them work in different situations. The three types you can choose from are the bait casting reel, the spinning reel, and the spin cast reel. Of the three crappie fishing reels the bait caster is the one you most likely will never use when you are crappie fishing because they are not suitable to fish with light test line and small crappie jigs. Bait casters are only used in very special situations as crappie rigs.

The most popular crappie reel is the spin cast reel because it is simple to use, but the spinning reel holds a very close second in popularity. The spin cast reel has a simple push button when you cast that releases the line. Spin cast reels are a good choice for beginning crappie fisherman as a crappie fishing rig selection because they are a great reel when you are first learning to cast. But there are many veterans who prefer them over spinning reel because of the soft delivery that's needed when fishing crappie live baits.

Spinning reels which are commonly referred to open faced reels, also make a good choice for any crappie rigs. Spinning reels are excellent choice for crappie fishing because you use very light test line to fish 1/64oz crappie jigs very easy. However spinning or open face reels are not like the spin cast reel that operates with a push button. Spin cast reels operate by opening or closing what is called a bail. When the bail is released you hold the line so it doesn't curl off the spool and then cast. Once you cast the bail will close when you turn the handle. Casting spinning reels takes a bit more practice, but is still a good choice for a crappie fishing rig.

Here's a few crappie rig tips that may help you.

Tip#1 If you are using a spin cast reel and just can't get your cast far enough to where the crappie are located, switch to a spinning ultralight reel. These reels release line quickly and farther.

Tip#2 Always get the drag on your reel by pulling the line from the rod tip. For example get your self a large lure with multiple treble hooks and cast it out onto the grass in your back yard make it hook into the grass then reel tight and set your drag.

With the many species of game fish waiting to be lured in the waters of North Carolina you will want to have a distinct advantage when you go angling for the most wanted and sought after sport fish – Trout! You will find it to your advantage to educate yourself about these fish and their feeding habits.

To begin with you need to know that there are 3 main species of trout living and breeding in the waters of North Carolina. These fish are:

• Rainbow Trout
• Brown Trout and
• Brook Trout popularly known as Speckled Trout

1. Brook Trout:
This species of trout is the only one that is native to North Carolina. Anglers can easily locate these fish in the cold waters of the mountains of Carolina. The black and white lower fins and bright colors are characteristics of the Brook Trout that averages in length of about 8 inches. So, a 12 inch trout caught will be something to make a trophy out of.

2. Rainbow Trout:
This is a very popular sport fish with anglers trying to get one for themselves every season and place where they can be found. Though this species of trout is native to the western parts of America it is believed to have been brought to North Carolina somewhere in the 80's. The Rainbow trout is easily distinguished by its unique red or pink bands along with its black spots along with brightly colored red or pink gills. The rainbow trout averages a length of about 10 inches however; rainbow trout rarely exceed 10 inches in length. Rainbow trout prefer cold fast flowing waters rather than warm still lakes and ponds. You can expect a fight when you hook a rainbow trout; this is what makes angling for this fish so much fun.

3. Brown Trout
Native to North Europe and brought to North Carolina in the beginning of the 1900s this fish is known by its brown-yellowish color speckled by red, orange and black spots on their sites. Though reports of having caught Brown Trout larger than 18 inches in length have come in it is rather unusual to find a Brown Trout longer than 12 inches. Like their Rainbow cousins these species of Trout can put up quite a fight when hooked albeit in a very different manner. The Rainbow Trout will jump and trash but the Brown Trout will swim to the bottom of the water body and hide among the rocks and vegetation. You can find these fish in slow flowing water with a lot of minnows.

North Carolina has an abundance of trout fishing destinations one can choose from. With the endless list of trout fishing destinations in North Carolina it is no wonder that anglers say that North Carolina is the only place to go trout fishing.

For those of you who are new to trout fishing I figured I'd write an article on some basic trout fishing tactics, tactics that will help you catch more trout. From these basic trout fishing tactics, as you practice and refine them, comes all of the trout fishing tactics that are available today. For the purposes of this article, these tactics will have to due with spin fishing, simply because that's my area of expertise. For those of you who like to wave feathers in the air in an attempt to catch trout, this article probably isn't for you. These basic trout fishing tactics are for the spin fisherman.

Before we get down to the actual tactics themselves, lets discuss our gear for a minute. When fishing for trout, it's important to use gear that's not too heavy. You could be using the best trout fishing tactics in the world and if you're gear is too heavy, your success will be limited. I prefer ultra light action rods and reels, spooled with four pound test monofilament fishing line. When fishing for trout, your gear should almost never be heavier than light action and the heaviest line I would suggest would be six pound test. But again, I personally prefer ultra light action rods and reels, spooled with four pound test line. Now that our gear is covered, let's get down to the basic trout fishing tactics, shall we?

  • Pay Attention To Your Hands - This is the most basic of trout fishing tactics, but also very important. Any scent on your hands will transfer to whatever bait you're using and will be detected by the trout. And when a foreign scent is detected by the trout, it will cost you bites. A great technique is to rub a handful of grass or dirt in your hands prior to baiting up. This will eliminate any unnatural odors that may be on your hands.
  • Pay Attention To Nature - When I refer to the word nature, I'm referring specifically to the weather and moon. You see, paying attention to the weather and moon can have quite an impact on you trout fishing success (as a matter of fact all of your fishing success). That's way educating yourself as to the way the weather & moon impact fishing is so important. There's no need to get your doctorate on the subjects either, a free report such as this will do wonders. Doesn't it just make sense to fish when the fish (trout) are the most active? Once you start fishing when nature is helping you out, you'll wonder how you ever fished without knowing this information.
  • Always Use Gang Hooks - When it comes to trout fishing, presenting your bait in a natural manner is key, especially where live worms are concerned. There is no better way to present a live worm while fishing like a set of pre-tied gang hooks. Gang hooks are so important because they enable you to present your live worms in a completely natural manner. This means that your worm will be outstretched, the way God intended, rather than "threaded" onto a hook, thus looking like some sort of worm ball.

These basic trout fishing tactics will get any angler on there way to becoming a trout fishing master. Now that you have the basic tactics, all that you have to do is practice your craft, by spending time on the water. Begin trout fishing while using these tactics, while fishing at the most opportune times of the day/month and you'll begin catching more trout than you ever though possible.

Any Erie steelhead fishing tips for this time of year?

Heading up this upcoming weekend to some streams in Erie, pretty much right by the lake.

I'm somewhat new at all this and I was wondering if anybody has any tips when it comes to the type of bait that could work well this time of year.

- I'm not fly fishing.

Any type/color of little jigs work? I've mainly used salmon eggs or wax worms the few times I've gone.

Small is key right now. The stream levels are really low and clear right now so downsize and downsize again if needed.. If you can use single eggs, so much the better. Single or double maggots should work with a tiny jig. Mini Foo jigs by Weldon Tackle works well. Try the motor oil color and white as well. One more thing to remember..shiny split shot spooks steelies in clear water so get some that are dull colored.

Concentrate on the deeper pools and look for fish that are rolling.

We are the people who end up saying, "Aww," when we witness young kittens prancing around their mothers. Yes, kittens can be adorable! But what can you say about all the different species of cats that are there in the world. Maybe at a distance they are gorgeous but up close most people like to avoid the bigger cats of the world. But nonetheless, they are beautiful. All of you must be thinking why am I talking about cats, well, the reason is that the Zoo of Puerto Vallarta recently celebrated new additions to their small pride!

Since the past couple of weeks a wave of news cubs, have been welcomed at el Zoológico de Vallarta. A range of animals like Pumas, Jaguars, Leopards have come into their little kingdom. In total 2 African Leopards, 3 Americans Pumas, 2 Black Panthers (Melanistic Jaguars, one male and one female,) a White-headed Capuchin Monkey, 3 Common Jaguars, 5 African Dwarf Goats, and a few Guinea Pigs have been born. This is not the end folks! The Zoo of Puerto Vallarta is awaiting the arrivals of a Striped Hyena, a Canadian Wolf, a white Bengal Tiger, three Spider Monkeys, a Black Jaguar and an orange Bengal Tiger, over the coming weeks. Isn't that exciting? It is a sight worth watching!

The family who owns the Zoo, the Castañeda family, is deeply concerned about these animals and continuously strives for their preservation. They also believe that it is the utmost care and affection that they provide to the animals that in turn helps them to reproduce even in their confinement.

Speaking of animals, the Red Bone Team of PVYAFCA recently went to El Morro to fish for Tuna. This team even caught two large sized Tuna of about the 60 lb. during their 6 hour long Charter. The Bay of Banderas is home for the small Jacks, Bonitos and Dorados. Even big sized Sail Fish have been spotted in these regions. Big sized Rooster fish are also being brought in by Punta Mita.

The great fishing season has begun and the "Toroaba" boat has brought good hearty catches of Tuna, Dorado and even some Sail Fish. What was most exciting about this was that they even managed to get hold of some Black and Blue Marlin which was at the La Corbeteña.

At the El Banco, fish like Blue and Black Marlin, in addition to Tuna, Dorado and Sail Fish have been spotted. The season of fishing has very well taken off and will hopefully continue till the month of December. With the way the fish have been flowing in, a number of locals and tourists of Puerto Vallarta have begun their fishing escapades. It is fun and exciting and an activity that you can do with your entire family.

]]> Well my friends, sadly we are ending another year of Bass Fishing here in the Northwest.  However, you can still land yourself a lunker this fall with these tips below:

1)  Fish Slow, Fish Deep:  As the water temps drop, it is important to chase the bass into the deeper waters, and along boulders which will help to retain heat.  Often, you will see schools of bass laying up against the boulders, trying to stay warm.  Also, as the ice begins to hit the lake, the bass will head towards more oxygen...hence, the deeper waters.  As always, with cooler water, means slower presentations.  Metabolism really slows down this time of year, so it is important to leave the bait in front of their nose as long as possible.  Often times, you will get strikes only on reactions, so keep it slow and simple.

2)  Flat head Jerk Baits:  If you can find a flat head jerk bait at your local tackle shop, grab it.  These baits suspend in the water, and have a much tighter wiggle to them then the average jerk bait for plug.  This is extremely important during cold water temps.  Often times, anglers make the mistake of using an extremely flashy, wobbly lure at this time, and won't get bit.  These fish want that lure slow....The flat head is perfect for this.

3)  Retrieves:  Make sure you work the retrieve as slow as possible.  I like to jerk, then wait 8-10 seconds, and then jerk again.  The bass really need to see the presentation for a while before they get the energy up to hit it.  Manually count the seconds in your head to ensure you are going slow enough.  If you think you are going slow enough...You are going too fast!

4)  Your Lake:  Make sure you fish a lake that maintains its vegetation as late into the year as possible.  Vegetation means oxygen, and oxygen means more fish.  Look for boulders and rocks on the lake floor.  These areas will retain more heat, and retain more fish.

Surf Fishing Rigs For Striped Bass

]]> If you are a surf angler, hooking a sizable striped bass in the surf is one of the most exciting experiences you can have. The secret is choosing the right rig and the right bait for the job. Here are my two favorite surf fishing rigs for this sought after fish.

The Fish Finder Rig

There are various forms of the fish finder rig, but the one detailed here has caught more striped bass than any other. This surf fishing rig is best used with live bait, eels hooked through the the tail are always the top choice, followed by either menhaden or herring. Leader length between hook and swivel should be around 20 inches. Attaching a weight slide above the swivel will make the bait presentation much better than a fixed version. Striped bass have excellent eyesight so try and keep the rig as simple as possible. The fish finder rig works well because it allows the live bait to move naturally in the current.

The Hi Low Rig

There are also many versions of the high low rig, but this is the one that seems to catch the most striped bass. This rig works well because smaller bass tend to sit higher in the water while the larger fish will stay closer to the bottom. For this surf fishing rig tie two 5 inch dropper loops on a 5 foot length of leader, keeping the loops around 12 inches apart and tie your hooks to the end of the loops. 15 inches below the bottom loop attach a weight snap, and 15 inches above the top loop tie on a swivel for the main line. The object of this rig is for the fish to hook themselves, so circle hooks will work the best. Try using a larger bait like bunker chunks on the bottom loop, and a slightly smaller bait like blood worms for the top loop.

Using these two surf fishing rigs will greatly improve your chances of hooking and landing a striped bass.

Every fall season thousands upon thousands of tourists flood New England states to drive around and look at leaves. I am writing this article to inform you all that there is something much more interesting you could be doing in the fall in New England... Bass fishing. Who would want to drive around and look at dying leaves when they knew they could be pulling in a very ALIVE lunker bass on the end of their line. This is New England Fall Bass Fishing.

The difficulty in landing bass in the fall is the ever fluctuating weather. In other seasons predictable weather leads to predictable fishing patterns and behavior. The fall takes this predictability out of the equation and throws us into a world of unknowns. Fortunately, being the smart anglers that we are, we can understand all of the weather possibilities that fall may throw at us, and know how to best conquer them. Thus, here are my fall bass fishing tips to you. 

The first thing to consider when bass fishing in the fall is where the bass will most likely hold. In the fall temperatures begin to slowly drop thus making it more comfortable for fish to come to shallower waters which are now cooling down to their optimal temperature. Towards the end of the summer, water is at its warmest, which is often out of a bass' comfort zone. This leads to locating them much deeper in the water column. Towards the end of summer is also the time in which their food supply becomes most scarce. So the good news is this: (a) When fall begins, temperatures begin to drop to optimal ranges, and because of this (b) bass will come into the shallows, and most importantly, (c) they will be absolutely starving. Knowing this we will elect to fish in the shallows for the beginning of the fall season. As far as lure selection and presentation is concerned when early fall bass fishing, lures and tactics that you would use in the spring can be revisited with great results in the fall. Remember, the fish will be in water that is close to their optimal range for activity so don't be shy throwing shallow running crankbaits and spinners to trigger a reaction strike. Bass fishing New England waters in the early fall creates opportunity for some explosive days of fishing.

In mid-fall the water in the shallows continues to cool until it reaches equilibrium with the temperature of the deeper water. This is by far the most difficult part of the fall to fish, because bass no longer have a preferred temperature zone to relate to, and thus can be found pretty much anywhere in the lake. For those of us who do not own fish finders the only option is to use process of elimination to find fish. The only advice I can offer here is to invest in a fish finder. If you don't have a fish finder or the budget to purchase one fish all structure you can get a lure to and use process of elimination to find which pattern will work that particular day.

Late fall bass fishing comes when winter approaches and water temperatures in the shallows plummett below temperatures in the depths. This is when bass retreat to deeper structure where they will stay until spring. When water temperatures drop below a range of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, being cold blooded, bass become torpid and less willing to bite. This is a concern when approaching late fall bass fishing. We will need to create a presentation that is slow, and worthwhile for a bass. When I say worthwhile, I am referring to the size of your bait, a fish that is frozen to the gills is going to be less likely to expend energy for a mere snack, thus putting something that would be considered a larger meal in front of its face will yield better results. On top of this, slow down. With lethargic fish we must be patient and leave the bait in the strike zone for a longer period of time. Large jigs and carolina rigged plastics are a couple of surefire approaches to filling your livewell in the late fall.

Understanding these three phases of fall bass fishing and understanding when each is taking place will allow you to make informed decisions on where to locate fish, and how to have them end up in your boat.

New England fall bass fishing is one of my favorite fishing situations to approach. Nothing can top the feeding frenzy that is created when malnourished bass come into shallow waters to gorge themselves before winter hits. If you take anything from this article to the water with you next fall understand the three distinct phases of the fall and how bass will relate to their environments as a function of water temperature.

If you are fishing for tuna some techniques have been proven to work better than others. Tuna typically bite better in lower lighting. In my experience, fishing in the early morning, or the late afternoon, tends to work best. Some days they bite early, some days they bite later. Even if you are only catching Mahi Mahi, do not leave the area until you have caught your fill, or are looking for other challenges.

Trolling for tuna works extremely well. Typically using multiple lures, spread at least twenty feet apart works well. Keep the green machine well back of any other lures.

When all else fails, be on the lookout for dolphins, whales or sharks. Large schools of tuna can often be found following these natural hunters. Additionally, it is always a good idea to look for diving birds, as this is usually a sign of large schools of bait fish.

The improper handling and preparation of fish is what leads to the "fishy" taste that a lot of people don't like about fish. Proper handling of the fish will not only maintain the proper taste of the fish but also prevent the fishy smell often associated with fresh caught fish. Here are a few tips to properly prepare and maintain the freshness of your fish to make sure that you have a delicious dinner.

Once you land the fish, try to avoid contact with any hard surfaces to prevent bruising the fish. There is no need to bang the fish's head on the boat and try not to drop it. The fish should be rinsed immediately by hosing it off or rinsing it in a bucket of water to remove the slime in the water came from and prevent any bacteria that can lead to contamination. Don't use water from the lake or the local marina or any municipal or industrial discharge. If you're in doubt that the water you want to use is fresh use potable water instead.

Chill the fish within an hour to prevent any deterioration. Proper planning and a relatively small investment can make sure you're prepared to store your fish when they're caught. You can store your fish in a well chilled cooler. A good rule of thumb is to cover a pound of fish with a pound of ice.

The fish should be cleaned as soon as possible. The tissues of fish are sterile but their scales are not and can contain several different types of bacteria. Avoid rough treatment when cleaning the fish because wounds in the fish skin can allow the spread of bacteria that may be in the scales to the meat. If you are going to gut the fish rather than making fillets, it is wise to cut the belly as it leaves no blood in the body. Do not soak cleaned fillets for a long time in freshwater because that can reduce the texture and flavor of the meat.

The quality of a fresh fish can be maintained up to five days if it's properly cleaned. Make sure to wash your hands and the fish as you are cleaning them and that you wash your hands when handling the fish in preparation for cooking.

No matter how you cook your fish or what type of fish you are cooking there is one simple rule you can follow: whether cooking fillets or a whole fish cook 10 minutes for every inch measured. For example took a 12 inch fish for 12 minutes. Allow 15 minutes for fish enclosed in foil or that is sauce baked and double that time for frozen fish.

Extra time will also be needed if the fish is going to be baked while packed in aluminum foil to allow the heat into the meat. Allow an extra five minutes for fresh fish and 10 for frozen.

Do not cook a frozen fish because it will turn it mushy and dry. Thaw in the fridge for 24 hours or run under cold water, never thaw at room temperature or in hot water.

Following these simple steps will ensure that your fish is as enjoyable to eat as it was to catch!

Early Fall Bass Tips

]]> Well, we are definitely beginning to enter the fall bass pattern in the Northwest.  If you can disregard the ridiculous fist pump, here are some fall bass tips that will help you bag more fish.

The shad and other baitfish are starting to move back up into the bays and creeks at this point.  This this 3+ pound largie that I caught this morning was taken at Hayden Lake, ID, in a foot of water.  If you read our post entitled Late Summer Smallmouth, you will see that we have been fishing 25-40 feet deep jigging throughout August.  However, water temperatures fluctuate often in the Northwest, and can move fish patterns in just a matter of days. 

The Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass have moved up into the shallows once again, and present an excellent opportunity for anglers from boat and shore to capitalize on this opportunity.  The water temps are currently ranging from 72 degrees to as high as 80 degrees during high sun days.  With water temps still high, bass are very aggressive.  The largemouth from the picture above was taken on a 5" pumpkin pepper sinking worm by Mr. Twister.  I was also throwing a 7" Senko by yamamoto in Green Pumpkin color.  7-9 inch worms result in less hook sets by smaller bass, but can definitely help you find that lunker.  For those of you who have not tried a Mister Twister lure, they are excellent, high quality, and almost half the price of Yamamoto lures.  I love both Yamamoto and Mr. Twister, so pick by preference and wallet size.

If you launch at the back of Hayden, for fish the back of Spirit, Fernan, etc, you may be having trouble chasing the largemouth into the thick weeds.  Unfortunately there is a big millfoil problem at Hayden, causing much of sportsman's access to be unfishable.  I found size 2 Wacky, Weedless hooks at Cabelas for about $2.50.  These will help you fish your senkos or twisters wacky, while still hitting these high vegetation ares.  Buy yourself a couple packs, as you will use them.

Night time topwater will still help you land more bass during fall.  The bass are still rising and hitting bugs off the top, so take advantage of the opportunity with flies, jitterbugs, poppers, and topwater plugs.  Work varying retrieves, and make sure that you allow the bass to take the lure under before you set the hook.  The large majority of anglers set these topwater bates too quickly, resulting in a missed strike and wrapped line.

In conclusion, during the Early Fall Bass Pattern, take it to them in the shallows.  Match the bait with Green Pumpkin, and Pumpkin Pepper colors.  Finally, don't be afraid to swap out baits often, or change the size/color to make a better presentation.  Sometimes it takes a subtle change to bring the lunkers out.  Join us at www.hungryhook.com for more information.  Fall might be the best fishing time of the year if you approach the bass right.  Feel free to leave a comment should you have any questions, and most of all, respect the lake.

]]> Shore fishing techniques depend on the species you are trying to catch.  Fall presents a great opportunity for you to land everything including bass, crappie, catfish, trout, and more.  Needless to say, you will be busy.  Here are some shore fishing techniquest to help you catch more fish.

Bass:  Grab your self a bag of Gary Yamamoto "Yamasenkos" in Green Pumpkin or Pumpkinseed color.  5" is a good size.  You will need to buy a pack of 3/0 EWG Worm Hooks with an "Offset Shank".  You can buy them at any fishing store.  Good brands are Gamakatzu and Lazer Sharp by Eagle.  Many anglers, including me, like to hook their Yamasenkos "wacky" style, meaning right through the middle of the worm.  They sell special "wacky hooks" just for this occasion at Cabelas.  Just cast the worm into the water, let it sink, and twitch the end of your fishing rod.  Bass can't handle it, and will jump on them.  Don't be afraid to let them take the bait for a couple seconds before setting the hook as they need time to engulf the whole worm.

Crappie:  They sell a plethora of crappie jigs, spinners, and even live maggots at the tackle shop.  If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, you are better off with the live bait.  If you do mind, you can buy plastic maggots, that smell a bit like licorice, and catch them that way.  Again, nothing can beat a live bait.  You will need to buy yourself a crappie rig, including a bobber, swivel, bobber stop, jigs, and bait.  Ask your local tackle shop for help.  If you live in the Coeur d'Alene area, check out Fins 'N Feathers on Sherman.  They give you great advice and will have you set up in no time.

Catfish:  Catfish are great for night-time fishing.  You can see the catfish anglers lining the shores with their lanterns at Hauser all the time.  Plus, the rigs are simple.  Some fishermen like to set their bait a foot or so off the bottom, but if you want to have an easy rig set up, just laying your bait on the bottom will work.  Now for the bait.  I love to use chicken livers.  You can buy them for cheap at the store, and a little pricier at the bait shop.  Some people use hot dogs, live worms, even dog food.  Catfish pickup garbage on the bottom all day long, so they are pretty indescriminate.  Make sure you watch the palm of your hand when pulling them out of the water, because they will spine you if they get the chance.

Trout:  This is a great gamefish to fish for from shore.  Check out Fernan Lake, Hauser, Hayden, Priest and Pend Oreille for some great trout fishing.  Trout in the early fall pattern will bite on Mepps Aglia Spinners, which can be purchased at basically any shore including Wal-Mart.  You can also catch them using Powerbait by Berkley, right off the bottom.  I love the Rainbow Shebert color.  Be very careful if you decide to take trout home from Hauser, as they are almost always filled with worms.  Just cast out your Powerbait, and let it sit on the bottom.  You can use a bobber with a bobber stop as a marker to watch your line.  A lot of anglers like to pull their bait up off the bottom about a foot in case it is garnering more bites.

]]> Pike fishing is one of the styles of fishing that is very popular in North America, everyone in the United States and Canada Fish for Pike. It is also commonly done in the spring and summer although some fishermen will do it in the winter as well.

When fishing for Pike there is a few things that you need to keep in mind. You need to know what exact type of bait to use and how to set the hook. There are also many different species of pike and this can get a little bit confusing if you do not know the difference between them.

There are three main types of pikes called Pickerel, Northern Pike, and Muskellunge. If you are fishing for a certain species of pike then it is a good idea to do a little bit of research so that you can find out the characteristics of each type of fish.

Lures and Bait

When trying to pick the right type of bait, I find that minnows and smaller fish work very well for pike. Rapalas are good if you are fishing for those big ones as well.

Generally live bait is what you want to use. You could also use jigs and worms for the smaller pike as I have had lots of success with these as well. Pike are not picky eaters so a variety of lures are going to work for you. You just need to experiment and see what one is going to work best.

As I mentioned before, the spring is generally the best time to fish for pike. This is when they are first starting to come out from the winter and start to feed. I have noticed that the fish bite better in the spring than any other season.

Catching Bass in August Shadows

]]> Shadows might be your most important resource for catching bass on hot August days.  For about 3 weeks (Starting after the 10th), the bass in lakes all over Eastern Washington/North Idaho move into the shadows next to walls and trees like no other time of the year.  I've spent days on the lake testing this theory, and 9 times out of 10, I can fish in the sun 6 inches out of a shadow, and not take a hit.  However, the moment I drop my shaky head or Senko into the middle of that shadow, it is almost instantly engulfed.  I've tested this way on lakes ranging from Long Lake, WA (near Suncrest) to Hayden Lake, and even Rose Lake.

I understand that most fishermen would say, "Of course they're going to be in the shadows during late summer."  I agree with that comment.  Again, though, there is no other time for shadow fishing in the year quite like these 3 weeks.  The bass are that finicky right now, and you must think like them.  It's not to say that you can't catch fish up on the banks in the sun during August.  You can...but I'm talking about quality.  If you want lunkers, stick to the shadows.  I like to troll around the bank looking for a shadow, and then hit it 3 or four times before moving on.  I can cover an entire half of the lake in 3-4 hours fishing this way, and I assure you my strikes per cast ratio goes through the roof.

Now for the lures.  Of course you have your staples like Slug-Gos and Senkos in white and green pumpkin.  I have a good friend who swears by the "Black Death Senkos" (black with gold or silver fleck), and he knocks them dead on Long Lake all day with them.  Make sure to wacky rig them if possible.  If you are fishing a weedy area, turn the hook back into the worm and hide it to make it weedless (the lure should look like an upside down V when rigged this way).  I tend to stick to Green Pumpkin in clear water, and white in the stained waters.  Lakes like Fernan, Hayden, Twin, Hauser, and Spirit all tend to work with the Green Pumpkin.  Get into more stained waters like Long, Bear, and Newman, and white or black tend to garner more strikes.

For those who don't want to break the bank with Yamasenkos, you can find Mister Twister Exude Sinking worms at White Elephant on Division in Spokane.  I don't believe that the Spokane Valley store carries them.  They are cheaper than Senkos, have good action, and tend to last longer.  I buy them in white, and slay the smallmouth bass at Long Lake all day.  We've caught as many as 41 in just over 2 hours at long during August.  Again, we are looking for the shadows.

In addition to the Senkos, you can use the 4 1/2" Yamamoto Tubes, and even up to 9" ribbon tails rigged with an 1/8 ounce bullet wait.  Green pumpkin, pumpkinseed, white, and black tend to pull the most strikes depending on water clarity.  Fish them slow in these shadows, and give them a big bounce off the bottom.

In conclusion, you have 3 weeks to make a difference with the shadows in August.  Please feel free to try this, even for an hour, and leave a comment about how it worked for you.  I guarantee you will land some lunkers, and cover a ton of lake in a short time.  I would also add to read our article about Late Summer Smallmouth when fishing the hours between 11am - 4pm on high sun days at www.hungryhook.com.  It will teach you what lures to use, and how deep to fish these bass in the middle of the day.

With August quickly approaching, we are certainly in the dog days of summer.  It’s easy to head out to the lake and cast out hundreds of times pulling nothing out but weeds or 4 oz fish.  Now is the time to think…DEEP.  Due to the increasing water temp, it is important to press out to 25-30 feet deep.  It is here where you will find the lunker you are looking for. 

Currently, Smallmouth Bass in Northern Idaho Lakes such as Lake Coeur d’Alene (particularly Cougar Bay and the Chain Lakes area), Hayden, Cocolalla, Preist, and Pond Oreille are hitting Twin Tail Grubs on a football jig bounced on the bottom.  Colors such as cinnamon with black fleck, or smoke with black fleck are garnering bites.  Work a bounce and slow retrieve motion, and don’t be afraid to let it rest on the bottom for 3-4 seconds at a time.  In stained water, stick to chartreuse or white.  Make sure to lookout for long points, or changes from rocky shoreline to sand.  Finally, look for drop offs of 7-8 feet or more.  These drop-offs will generally hold bass throughout the late summer pattern. 

Finally, Smallmouth Bass love rocks and boulders.  Take the time to know your lake floor.  Look for easy access routes to cover or deeper water.  Most of all, vary your retrieve pattern until you find the one that gets the aggressive bites.  Remember, a slow day on the lake is better than a good day at work.  So take your time, have fun, and land that lunker Smallmouth.

BAROMETER:It won’t matter where you are fishing lakes,Rivers,Oceans a rising barometer is always best.A falling barometer will slow fishing down in some cases it will stop fish feeding altogether.
TIDES:Play a key role in fishing,Depending on what species you are after depends on what tide you fish.    
BEACH FISHING: Mulloway and ,sharks like the last of the run in  tide and high water.
Tailor,andSalmon like the run in tide.

MOON PHASES:I believe the new moon through to 2 nights before the full are the best time for fishing and I won’t start fishing again until 2 nights after the full.Then I will fish right through until the next full moon.THE reason is I  believe, over the full there is too much current!The full moon usually means king tides which means lots off current for some reason shuts the fish down.Maybe the extra water is cooler which stops the fish feeding?Whatever the reason! The 4 nights around the full moon are good nights to stay home and watch fishing movies.The falling moon isn’t a bad time to go fishing because the current is slowing down after the full,The fish start coming back on the chew.Things are a bit slow but with some patience you will get a feed.The dark moon is pretty much the same as the falling moon ,,things are a bit slow with next to no current and very small tides with patience you will get a feed.The rising moon,Let the fun begin, the current starts to move, the fish start to feed, now is the time to go and catch
that big one.
SNAPPER:Fish late afternoons or early mornings even night time an hour each side of a tide change.Fish the reef ledges using baitrunner and baitcaster reels,4 to 10 kg line,5/0 snelled hooks floatlining with a lumo bead & head half of Slimy mac or Yakka.
MULLOWAY:Fish late afternoon or night time, fish deep holes,bridge pylons,rock walls and river mouths.Fish the first of the run in tide and both tide changes.Use overhead reels,5/0 to 8/0 hooks,10 to 15 kg line,use live bait or very fresh dead bait.
BLACK JEW:Use a bottom bashing rig,fish the inshore reefs in 20'c + water temp.10 to 30 meters of water around pinnacles is best.Use 6/0 to 8/0 hooks,15 kg line and fresh fish fillets are best bait.
COBIA:Fish night time using the last of the run out tide with live bait fishing the inshore reefs.Troll live bait on a down rigger,6 to 15 kg line with 5/0 to 8/0 hooks,use fresh or live bait and fish around bait schools,wrecks and reefs that hold bait schools.
WAHOO:Fish the last of the run out tide,use overhead reels,8 to 15 kg line.Troll a live tuna (bonito) on a short wire trace over summer.
MACKERAL:Fish run in tide in early morning or late afternoon,slow troll garfish,bonito or ribbon fish on a down rigger.Use 6 to 15 kg line and a short wire trace.
DOLPIN FISH:Troll skirted lures and live bait,8 to 15 kg line,5/0 to 8/0 hooks,troll around tide lines and floating debris.
TUNA:Fish deep blue water around 23'c for yellowfin and bigeye and 18'c for southern blues.Fish night time with fresh squid and blue light sticks.Best to fish the new moon,use 15 to 24 kg line and 8/0 to 10/0 hooks.
BROADBILL:Fish the seamounts and contour lines with a falling moon in water 18'c to 21'c at night time.Use fresh squid,10/0 to 12/0 hooks,24 to 36 kg line with green light sticks,Best to fish winter using live snapper.
REEF FISH. I tend to chase mixed reef fish over flat ground with a fern,y bottom, over the dark moon, and running up to the full on top of shoals.,the best for big reds and scarlet Perch.. The reason being with less tide I find the fish like to move around and graze.When fishing around the full moon you will find the fish around structures such as bommies and ledges because the fish will be hiding to get out of the current.. ,as the moon falls, you can start fishing the deeper water where the fish will star grazing again. only fish a couple hours each side of the tide change for best results.Fresh squid best bait for all reef fish.
RED EMPEROR: Fish nighttime over the new moon with a run out tide in 30 to 40 mtr water depth of 22'. Use overhead reel, 15 to 24 kg line and 5/0 to 8/0 hooks.use bottom bashing rigs and fish shoals. Fresh Husser is best bait.
SCARLETT SEA PERCH; Fish reefs on a run in tide. Go bottom bashing using fresh bait of squid or pillies. Fish 40 to 80 mtrs of water at night., with 10 to 15 kg line with 4/0 to 7/0 hooks.
CORAL TROUT; Fish in 23' or warmer water, floatlining. Small fresh trout is best bait for big trout , allow to float onto reef. Use a good 9/0 longshanked hook and 15 kg line.
ROSY JOBFISH; Use bottom bashing rig, 15 to 24 kg line and 6/0 to 8/0 hooks, fish run in tide in 40 to 120 mtrs of water with overhead reel. Fresh squid is best bait and water temp should be over 20'c.
RED THROAT EMPEROR: Go bottom bashing with fresh squid or pillies as your best bait. Use 4/0 to 6/0 hooks on 10 to 15 kg line, allow to drift onto reef.
SWEETLIP; Bottom bashing in 20 to 30 mtrs of water over reef with a run in tide. Use freshbait at night time for best results, with 5/0 hooks.
MANGROVE JACK; Fish during summer time at low tide at the first of run in along rock walls and structure. Use live bait and 4/0 to 6/0 hooks on 10 to 15 kg line.

What are the best types of bait used in fishing for large mouth bass in the fall?

I can not say the types and shad fish bait in the water where fish, therefore, what types of lures and what approach to use. Please help, frustrated!

Have you found yourself the question, "How can I catch more under? This is a common question among fishermen under and in this article I'll give some tips for catching bass and larger. Most of these tips can be applied almost immediately and help you be more successful.

Almost anyone can go out and get some of these fish, but consistently capture and lower numbers is another animal altogether. This Article will provide some tips that no doubt a great help to answer the question of how do I catch more bass.

The first thing we want to understand if we capture more serious are the fish themselves. These fish are predators and largely as an ambush their prey. This means looking for cover to hide behind it they can ambush their prey. This means that, like fishermen, we want to find and fish close to cover if we maximize our fishing time.

Below I to list a few baits that will help any angler catch bass lower and larger. Using any or all of these lures will help you answer the question, How can I get lower. When using any of these baits under remember to make sure that your hands are free of any smell. Any flavorings are in your hands will transfer to your bait. Bass has a very sensitive sense of smell and if they detect any unnatural odor, are less likely to bite.

  1. Live Bait - Whether fishing for large mouth Bass is a lake or smallmouth bass in the flowing waters of a river, live bait is one of the best ways to catch bass bigger and bigger. Dark circles or large shad are a great way to catch more bass. Live crayfish are also a very good bait, but are much more difficult finding of dark circles or shad in most areas. Make sure you manage your dark circles or shad correctly. These lots of bait fish need oxygen and changes in water temperature in your environment should be minimal. The key, especially for the largest bass, is that the bait is so "alive" as possible.
  2. Realistic Lures - If you do not like using live bait, fishing lures can be effective also realistic. One of the keys to catching bass and bigger it seems that you are offered the most realistic way possible. KickTail The Minnow is an excellent choice for attracting bass. Shad lures only mild storm wildeye good job for the big bass?

Do.They Yes, they are so good, in fact, it used even catch Snook and Tarpon saltwater. Storm Wild Eye are very realistic in appearance, if necessary "match the hatch" when the fish. Most fishermen when the big picture Lunker Muskie hunting, but if you want to catch more muskie think smaller baits and hooks. I caught my biggest muskellunge while walleye fishing a plastic worm in September. In most cases, can be considered persons coincidence get a slot while fishing for other species. Most fishermen are turning to heavy tackle, bait and trolling big as the average catch muskellunge. Personally, I'm bored or simply tired of trolling all the time.

Now, one of my tactics The most successful used primarily in the fall is used for fishing for walleye and muskie great together. I use size average face and big walleye bait especially jigs. Equipment and Layout

When I say smaller baits I mean great walleye jigs or very large. As mentioned this approach has developed a body of water with a large population of large walleye. Now, using the idea that big baits medium or large golden fish. I started throwing 5 to 6 inches Shad plastic bodied jigs along the lines of weeds. I landed a number of big walleye, but to my surprise, muskellunge were also bait same. Tall Plastic has become an important part of my arsenal of fishing muskie. All major plastics work very well.

Vary the speed of your retrieve when shaking up muskellunge. I lucky in late fall, using RIP violent shaking motion. ITA tiring, but effective. Experiment and you'll find something that works for you.

When fighting a muskie of light tackle, be careful not to fight to exhaustion, which increases the risk of death of late if you plan to catch and release. Ideally, you should release a fish by simply typing the single hook with a pair of pliers needle nose, while the ITA in the water on the side of the boat. Cut Off The Hook if the fish is hooked deeply. Fishing for muskie are a fragile resource, so do your best to release that muskie no worse for wear. Now that next season will be ready to muskie fight another day and make this day a great day for another fisherman.
